It is amazing when we think about the fact that our human bodies are made up of more than 600 muscles. Muscles are the foundation of movement, and one of the major fibers to our being. Without muscles, we would have no movement, and a lack of movement, particularly from a perspective of quality and quantity, would be detrimental to us as a whole.
From a therapeutic point-of-view, Physical Therapists are considered “Movement Specialists”. Our training and education, equips us with the knowledge to help those who are injured, as well as not injured, to be better at mastering their own movement. From the neurological and orthopedic perspective, it is imperative to perform regular exercise and activity to prevent contractures, soft tissue shortening, general debility and weakness, amidst so many other things. I particularly emphasize the importance of movement and exercise, as it relates to people with Parkinson’s in my recently written e-book. I have had the opportunity to help many patients who had been diagnosed with this disease to realize the importance of exercise, and movement, and hope to help many more to come. I am an advocate for exercise, and I believe in doing it myself to not be a hypocrite. Besides, I am of the belief that if your therapist is making you and telling you to exercise, and not doing any themselves, they don’t deserve to treat you. There is no better teacher than empirical knowledge. It helps you to be not just a teacher, but a master of that particular subject. So, I admonish you the reader, to get up daily and move. By us developing this practice, it will soon be a habit that our bodies will eventually thank us for.
If you are a person with, or caregiver of a person with Parkinson’s, please check out my new e-book, and by all means share it. Furthermore, let’s all get to moving better!!
